about

My 2011 installation "Discipline" is a choir of electric guitars wired so that each guitar's pickups cause its strings to resonate in response to an (unheard) classic rock radio station. Each guitar is tuned to a single pitch class, for the 12 tone equal tempered scale, and each guitar only sounds when its pitch is present in the source signal. This pitch detection is far from perfect, but patterns are clearly heard depending on the underlying music (or more chaotic behaviour when there are advertisements or speech in the broadcast). You get a smeared-out, spatialized rendition of whatever's on the air.

This set of 10 tracks is a version of The Gertrudes' 2011 album "Till the Morning Shows Her Face To Me" as heard through the guitars on a November afternoon in 2012, at Modern Fuel Gallery in Kingston Ontario, just before I took down the installation after a month-long exhibition.

You can hear (and purchase!) the original album here: thegertrudes.bandcamp.com
Any contributions towards downloads of my version will be directed to the band.
