about
The famous tune "Give Peace A Chance" was recorded by John Lennon, Yoko Ono and many attendant fans and hangers-on, in Room 1742 of the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montréal on June 1 1969.
In 2014 I found myself staying on the 16th floor of the hotel. As I had the basic materials for creating impulse responses with me (a decent portable recorder, some balloons, and a pin) I asked the hotel if they would let me visit 1742 for a few minutes. Security let me and my wife in and I spent 10 minutes recording a variety of IRs from different perspectives.
Since then I've used the impulse responses on recordings I've produced, including a great children's album by Gary Rasberry and the Woodshed Orchestra. The 1742 IR was used to add some body to Gary's acoustic guitar and vocal. See store.cdbaby.com/cd/garyrasberryandthewoodsh
I don't know why I never tried it before, but subjecting "Give Peace A Chance" to an "I am sitting in a room"-style treatment -- passing it through numerous replications of the virtual room -- gives a predictably interesting result.
And if you don't know "I am sitting in a room", google it and its composer, Alvin Lucier!
